Antoinette Lohmann (Amsterdam, 1969)  grew up surrounded by Hungarian and Romanian gipsy music. Her father played cimbalom and piano, her mother cello. At the age of eight Antoinette began violin and piano lessons, and for a short while even played the panpipes.
In 1987 she went to the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, where she studied violin with Jean Louis Stuurop and viola with Esther van Stralen. It was van Stuurop’s knowledge and interest that inspired her to study Baroque violin, which she did with Lucy van Dael. She also followed courses, including one with Jaap Schröder.
Antoinette has always remained active in diverse fields of music: she has played violin and viola in the Argentinian tango ensemble Bailongo and has appeared with the renowned Argentinian bandoneonist Rodolfo Mederos. For years she had a salon orchestra, and she played with the well-known music theatre group Flairck in the production entitled 'Golden Age' (violin, viola and viola d'amore.) She has played modern music with groups including the Helios Ensemble, with whom she has recorded works by Dutch composers such as Tristan Keuris, Jaap Geraedts and Ludwig Otten. Otten dedicated two viola pieces to her, which were published by Donemus.
Nowadays  her repertoire is concentrated in the period between the early 17th century and the late 19th century, and she has revealed a particular interest in the playing of unusual instruments such as the viola d'amore, the tenor viol and the violino piccolo, and in exploring their repertoire. At the moment she is making an in-depth study of the lira da braccio.

In recent years she has concentrated above all on chamber music.  Together with pianist Vaughan Schlepp she has recorded for Challenge Records all the sonatas for piano and violin by Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792)  and by Margarethe Danzi. For Slot Zuylen she provided a CD of chamber music by Belle van Zuylen (Isabelle de Charrière) and another, as part of a series of museum gifts, of Dutch music from the early Baroque period. In addition she has made many recordings with small ensembles, including ones with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging (formerly Cappella Figuralis), Ensemble Schönbrunn and Island.
Over the years Antoinette has also played in many orchestras and ensembles, including La Sfera Armoniosa, the Utrechts Barok Consort, Anima Eterna, Musica Temprana, Al Ayre Espanol, the Freiburger Barock Orchester and many others.
Antoinette is on the faculty of the Utrechts Conservatorium, teaching Baroque violin and viola.
